Why Hurricane Season Is a Leadership Test

Every year around this time, Florida starts talking about hurricane season. Supplies get stocked, plans get made, and everyone starts watching the forecast a little closer. But the more years I spend running a business down here, the more I realize hurricane season doesn't just test your home. It tests your leadership.

I've seen this play out the same way, year after year. Some people prepare early. They stay calm, they've got a plan, and they lead their teams through whatever comes without panic. Others wait until the storm shows up on the radar and then scramble to catch up. By then it's too late to prepare properly. All they can do is react.

That pattern isn't unique to weather. It's true in business every single day.

The leaders I respect most aren't the ones who handle a crisis well in the moment. They're the ones who built the systems long before the crisis showed up. They trained their people. They thought through what could go wrong. They put the discipline in early, so when the pressure hit, there was nothing left to figure out. Just execute the plan.

That's the difference between a leader and someone who happens to be in charge. A leader does the unglamorous work of preparing when things are calm, because they know calm doesn't last. The people who wait until the emergency to figure out their next move usually find out too late what kind of leader they actually are.

I try to run my business the same way I prepare for a storm. Build the plan before you need it. Train your people before the pressure hits. Stay calm because you've already done the work, not because you're hoping it'll be fine.

Don't wait for the emergency to find out who you are as a leader. Build the discipline now.
